I am sure that Golda contributed to the respect of women. I doubt that she created it. This is yet another datapoint showing that countries with female PM's have citizens that now accept female leaders with open arms. This is the benefit of having a female PM - it sets a GREAT example! I think Golda Meir who was from Wisconsin originally has something to do with it. I wrote a report about her when I was in Jr high I think. But I think a more important reason is like AK said.....the concept of the Sabra where every Israeli must be strong and independent....that's why you saw women in the Israeli military at least a decade before the US military: en.wikipedia.org To get to the presidency, I think what is needed is a change in the image of women in this country.........and that's happening with their participation in what had been considered mostly manly sports like ice hockey. They featured one of the women on the US Olympic hockey team last week. She's from WA state.....when she was a kid she was sent to live in Vancouver because she couldn't play ice hockey here......they wouldn't allow her on the boys' team and there was no girls' hockey teams. So she lived in Canada for a number of years. Now she's playing ice hockey in the Olympics and doing clothes modeling on the side. She also wants to start a woman's ice hockey league. In a patriarchal society like the US, I think the woman that runs for president has to show she is strong, intelligent, feminine and 'manly' without being a lesbian. Its still a tough one to pull off. Interestingly enough, Geena Davis, the star of that show I told you about, comes close......she's tall, is a member of Mensa and is athletic...she is a capable archer and tried out for the American archery team that went to the one of the Olympics. Like I said, its a tough package to pull off. ted
