"why doesn't everyone understand these simple points about the CPI? Do they just not read, ever?" Well... most people really WANT to believe that their government is honest in it's dealings with them. And, the government dips HEAVILY into the techno-jargon to obscure the games it's pulling with the statistics. With terms like 'hedonic adjustments' and 'chain-weighted inputs' even quite a few C.P.A.s might grow bored with the long-winded explanations, and allow their attention to drift off. That is one of the things fraudsters count on --- that light will not be shown on their activities very often. And, no doubt it's significant that BOTH political Parties find much to like in the current state of affairs. The hidden 'inflation tax' (inflation + bracket creep) is the politicians FAVORITE TAX, because they never have to record a vote on it! And, bureaucrats LOVE it.
