If the Democrats' biggest problem is vulnerability on national security then it seems inevitable that a relative move to the right is required there. This is a good litmus test for the shrill progressive crowd; sure there is plenty to scream about regarding Iraq and OBL still being at large, but screaming may not be the way to convince the Ohio swing voter that Bush was wrong and someone else should be put in charge of their safety. I agree that you need a real leader to define a position that works and stick to his/her guns when the mud machine starts up on Rove's side.

You said John But, finally, on the issues argument, I don't see the Dems still able to convince the country on the national security argument. Their biggest problem. Here's my 2cents.. I think that the way the Nation will be convinced on the national security argument is going to be an unfortunate one... Much like Katrina...and the failure of the government to act. We will undoubtedly have an attack. As the Muslim world is becoming more and more hostile.. e.g. the carton debacle... there will be more volunteers to suicide.. It's coming. Where, when and how those are the unknowns but when they do the confidence in the current administration and national security will be up for grabs. Maybe then the electorate will realize that we.. as I believe we did.......went down the wrong trail in retaliation for 9/11
