rrufff, yes - networking is fascinating to me and I am interested in learning more about it. I now check Broadbandreports regularly.

rrufff, DSL update: yesterday SBC doubled my download speed to 640 kbps [as measured] and for web browsing, including Stockcharts.com , that feels about as fast as Comcast cable did [at less cost]. Cable - at about 5 times my present speed - is only necessary if one downloads a lot of large files, like movies.

I still have just one PC connected directly to the DSL modem. But the IP for the modem is no longer shared with the PC. The modem thinks the PC is on a LAN - with a private [?] IP. In any case, ZA is blocking attempted intrusions and even some from SBC nodes - with no adverse effects.

I've been on SBC DSL since 2/16 and so far like it fine.

rrufff, SBC DSL progress: a few days ago an SBC technician on the dslreports.com board named 'SBC Direct' upped the nominal download speed to 1536 kbps. Actual measurement on that site gives me about 1240/320 down/up consistently. This is close to what others in my zip code under the same plan [?] get.

Saturday I reconnected through my older Linksys router without performance change. I can still check modem info by going to 192.168.0.1
So far, so good.

PS: the SBC tech said I'm just under 20,000 ft from the CO. Another test I ran on dslreports.com estimated 13,000 ft.
