Its XP/2000.

What I've figured out is that mssearchnet.exe enables stuff to come off the net. That file is currently infected with Downloader-XC. I also had a worm but I think I got rid of that.

I have located the mssearchnet.exe file. It won't let me delete it. Should I try to do delete it in safe-mode?

Steve and CJ,

Success........I got rid of mssearchnet.exe in Safe Mode. I never got to your MS site Steve. My PC started to lock up....apparently, my clicking on the file was causing something to happen. CJ, the "properties" file finally came up but it was not write protected.

Meanwhile I have another one: Dialer-269. Going back into Safe Mode.

Actually, the whole thing is a lot more serious than I thought. My computer has picked up an infection from an anti spyware company that infects computers so they can sell their software. Nice huh? Its called Spy Falcon or Spystricker. So far I have found only two ways to get rid of the stuff......and both take hours to do.

So instead of starting on them, I have complained to my security provider, McAfee........I feel better but it won't do my computer much good.
