I lived through the Hoover era and was well aware of his power and ability to manipulate because as we knew.. he HAD something on everyone.

What amazes me is that his values were so prominently displayed as those of family etc. as your article states here.

Yet he never married and lived with his partner whose name I forget for the greater part of his life. There were suspicions never proved but his absolute control of others as evidenced by the last line of your article that even the president may not have had the courage to confront him

Cohn whom he enlisted as his aide later was disbarred in New York State and I know that he was gay.. He was also very homophobic and in many ways ruined the lives of other gay people.

They were an odd combination... and don't forget Shine... whom Cohn got into the little group because of an attraction.
The recent film that is up for the academy award..on Edward R. Morrow taking a stand against the completely fascist and nasty ways of McCarthy in dealing with people, often with uncorroborated stories to ruin their lives... is a good one. Someone should do a story on the unholy alliance of McCarthy, Shine and Cohn... if anyone could access records..

Here is an opinion piece on the wiretapping by Kennedy's then deputy, Nicholas deB. Katzenbach.

Good find. I've been reading the third volume of Taylor Branch's MLK bio. It has much of the stuff about Hoover's bugging activities, his hatred for MLK. Well told.

If such interests you, I recommend the book.
