Every vessel entering our ports is a potential bomb, just as is every airplane entering our airports.

But airplane cargo is inspected by TSA, which only hires Americans.

The Coast Guard does an excellent job but they can only inspect 5% of cargo. The rest of it, they rely on the integrity of the terminal operators, the stevedores, and the longshoremen, who have traditionally been very pro-American, if at times beholden to the mob.

I doubt very much you could bribe the mob to allow a nuclear weapon to be smuggled into the US.

I don't think it would take much to get an Al Qaeda sympathizer to look the other way.

Drudge Just Now: Bush called reports at about 2.30 aboard Air Force One to issue a very strong defense of port deal... MORE... He said he would veto any legislation to hold up deal and warned the United States was sending 'mixed signals' by going after a company from the Middle East when nothing was said when a British company was in charge... Lawmakers, he said, must 'step up and explain why a middle eastern company is held to a different standard.' Bush was very forceful when he delivered the statement... 'I don't view it as a political fight,' Bush said.... MORE... MORE...

Michael, I may have missed this this AM, but what does "operations" mean for this UAE company deal? The AG said this AM that the new owner for the British company was in charge of "operations".... Not in charge of security.

Do you know if we are screening EVERY employee at the ports now, in whatever capacity they are working? My guess is not...And if that is correct, why not?
