A mixture of both. Christianity has always been dominant, and in the smaller towns the church has always been the social center. But this militant and intolerant branch didn't really exist until the late '70s/early '80s. Not really sure how far it will go, but the echo chamber than many insist on living in is very self-reinforcing.
