I shouldn't have used "stupidity"- it was too loaded a word. I guess I see the problem (that of our appearing prejudiced) as not a problem, because part of our problem (imo) is that ME citizens tend to think we are weak because we are not prejudiced (because we are open, and some what liberal)- and where this action changes that thinking, it's probably positive, at least WRT the US being perceived as weak and wimpy. (and since we don't even have to torture anyone to get the message across, I'd say it's a win win) I'd also suspect intelligent moderates in the ME will continue to understand we are far less prejudiced than any country in the ME- and so we won't lose any ground with moderates (what few there are left).
