Not very provocative really- it's pretty much what Kholt (Karen) has been saying ever since I met her on line- fear is frequently out of proportion and people overestimate their control over systems. I'm not sure what you think is so out of the box here.

I agree with Crichton on the fear thing (as do many here), and anyone who knows about complex systems knows they aren't very predictable (not even by people with "humility" which doesn't seem to add anything to predictive abilities, though it does tone down people's assessments of their own predictive abilities.)

If you apply Crichton's fear logic to 9/11 you come up with something pretty interesting... Of course that's been done on this thread too.
