Generally speaking, one has to behave themselves well before they can apply by handing in a written application. There need to have 2 CCP members who are willing to introduce the new applicant. And there will be a probation period even after being admitted. Depending on individual case (work unit), the criteria can be very high in some working units, while very low in others. This is true especially since late 1990s, when Jiang Zemin called on allowing capitalists to join the CCP. >> Is it mostly who you know, what you know, or what?<< It is in some cases (especially in some remote areas), but not true in most cases. Furthermore, now in China money can be just as powerful as power itself, if not MORE powerful, CCP membership is far less attractive now! Some corrupted businessmen first became rich, then they would be invited into the party. The line bet. Money and power has become blurred in China after 1978. I remembered that someone here on SI was accusing me were a CCP member. I replied that I wish I could do the honor<g>. I was not qualified even if I wanted to join when I was in China. >>Are there examinations? << I don’t think there is any written exams, but sure there should have some oral ones. >>Are there educational criteria?<< Not for joining the CCP. Higher education could NEVER become criteria since that would exclude a lot of poor farmers and workers. But one thing to keep in mind is that now one has to pass a very tough National Examination of Public Servant just to work in gov. as a public servent. One important thing to keep in mind, the current CCP is NO CCP before 1978. The previous CCP members usually had to be very selfless, putting people’s interest ahead of themselves. Both my parents were old generation of CCP members, and until this very moment, I am still VERY proud of them! But after the so-called Economic Reform, the CCP has gone rotten! I am not saying there are no good CCP members, especially at the top levels, but they have become minority. So it is much harder to join CCP than joining other parties in China (there are 7-8 other political parties except CCP, although only CCP is the governing party. Many Westerners do NOT know between 1950 and 1970, there were some high ranking officials (heads of state level Departments) were NOT CCP members, but were party members of other smaller political parties, or in some case, formal GuoMinGang general). During the last decade or so, many of those smaller political parties in China have been actively recruiting new membership. I guess they are hoping for some type of one-person one-vote election in future. I have a friend in Beijing who joined a small party by invitation 10 some years ago, and did not need any criteria. Since she was an early comer, and now already become a middle-level official in that party. One of the perk for her is, she can now travel all over the China, stay in luxury hotels at the tax payers’ expenses. So one thing I know for sure is that if these so-called democratic parties become the governing parties in China one day, they would definitely be just as corrupted, if not more!
