I dunno, an umbrella always seemed awful cheap for the coverage you get, in the litigation-prone society in which we live. I agree that having kids magnifies the risks tremendouly, and I have kids so for now it makes sense to me.....

Imo it is better if there is no possible question of the lawyers going after my personal assets. Particularly if you don't live in an asset-protection friendly jurisdiction.

By the way, judging from the apparently mis-directed response from Elroy which has since been deleted and revised (wisely), I might add that when one is talking to one's insurance company about types of insurance and insurance levels, it is always useful to get some telephone time with an underwriter, not an insurance salesperson.

I've been fortunate to have several lengthy discussions over the years with an actual underwriter in the company. It takes some time to get to that person, but probably always possible.

If you're comfortable living the rest of your retirement in a small studio apartment on SSI, you made the right decision in dropping your Umbrella policy.

Like Grace Z, you don't buy into these socialist insurance scams like health insurance.

I believe a couple in Virginia can receive as much as $706 monthly, or $8,472 annually.

I suspect you'll have to drop your internet service, and probably some meals as well. . . I see some cat food dinners in your future.

Everyone makes their choices and take the consequences.

RE: "my insurer and was told that I would have to be terribly negligent in some case to have to pay more than was already covered in my regular insurance policies."

Fire this guy. The fact is, insurance agents do not like to sell umbrella policies and avoid it like the plague. But I'd seriously question the integrity or knowledge of an agent that tells you you don't need it. That's self-serving to him not you.

RE: "I don't plan to be terribly negligent"

It has nothing to do with being terribly negligent, but purely about how serious the accident is and your networth.
