Ted, I don't understand what you mean.......are you suggesting the free market is not in play in CA?

There are like a ton of regulatory hoops that CA businesses have to hop through. Some are necessary such as environmental regulations, but some are just crazy. Why, for example, should I care if a parking garage was constructed using chemicals that "may lead to birth defects"? I see those Prop. 57 warnings all over the place, and I wonder, "What's the point? Only those with irrational phobias will care, so why cater to them?"

Every place in this country has what you call "regulatory hoops". They are meant to protect the average consumer. Yes, there are more in CA because the people there take a more pro-active role when dealing with their gov't. While it can be a bad thing, for the most part its a good thing. Many states have adopted laws first enacted in CA......the classic case is emission controls on cars.

By your definition, there is no place in the US that practices laissez-faire economics.

There's also the crazy workers comp laws that everyone agrees is too expensive and too taxing on businesses. No wonder a lot of small businesses decide to take the risk and employ illegal immigrants.

That's because CA probably the most workers comp fraud in the country. Remember........CA is the land of fruits and NUTS. They don't often operate in a reasonable fashion.
