I disagree with a precept quite early...

From the Darwinian point of view, Og is the man to bet on. He is cautious and prone to anxiety, and these are highly adaptive traits when it comes to survival.

OTOH, although Og the individual might survive, it's the risk-taking of Ig that actually makes the discoveries and improves the species as a whole. So assuming Ig's outlook is common (which it should be - surviving risktakers by definition will do well until they fail and should have spread their seed widely) his type might be more common...

As for your question, well, I'd say by definition "excessive" fear is not useful. It comes down to people not understanding statistics and risk, and so becoming most anxious over the risks (or rewards) which are greatest in 'headline' term even though least likely, e.g. 9/11 and lottery wins instead of car-related deaths and better interest rates on cash accounts.
