re: It would take an Al Gore, not a Bush, as President.

Gore looks better as time passes, doesn't he?

re: As it is now, it's not affordable with individuals footing the bill. Even in CA, where they will foot half the bill, it didn't make economic sense for me.

A lot of things we do don't make economic sense. Designer clothes, fine wines, expensive restaurants. I remember going out for a $500 meal (for 2) in the early 80's, and the next morning going out for a $7 breakfast (for 2) and thinking, "hey, that breakfast wasn't BAD".

But the great meal wasn't about the money, it just made us feel great. Having solar panels might not make perfect economic sense, but I sure would feel good when I wasn't using much electricity, feeding juice back into the grid, and watching the meter run backwards.

I know there are better solutions coming, but the problem is NOW. Somehow we have to make people think that alternative energy is Fillet Mignon and fossil fuels are hamburger.
