History will judge. Right now, i think the US has to start thinking of disinvolving itself. There is no point being involved in the civil war if thats what this becomes. And if it becomes that jihadists will pour in to help the sunnis and the iranians will be involved protecting the shiaa.

The truth is this kind of sectarian religious infighting and power strugle has been going on for centuries . They can become upset to the point of mass protest and riot over the cartoons , but not when they murder and kill each other and destroy their own "holy places" ? And this by the ones who would promote terror. Some glaring paradox that needs to play out for all to see and this purge of violent lunacy needs to also play out for the health & sanity for their own sakes . We are not seeing the failure of the US here , but the failure of Islam dealing with its radical elements & fanatical sectarian tendencies... & to get its act together and act as moderate as the Prophet decreed . A little more sanity and more literacy would be in order , and people themselves playing less as pawns to such bizarre political religious , tribal and sectarian manipulations. But we could help them to rebuild , at least this one central and important shrine and Holy place ...would be a gesture that should be done , and we could well afford , imo, regardless whether it is Shia or Sunni . And of course support and finance the operation of all the needed and necessary public universities , schools, and training facilities that could promote more literacy and self~awareness , and opportunity. First needed is trained police/army forces ....and that is coming .
