re: I don't know how good or bad the FCAT is. I am sure its the equivalent of the WASL here in Seattle. Its the critical assessment for the No Child Left Behind program, a program teachers do not like.

It seems to me that teaching isn't about memorizing a bunch of stuff... it's about teaching how to learn on your own and to think and reason.

Its probably both with greater emphasis on the latter.

You can't test that... but my favorite teachers were the ones that challenged me to think independently.

Yes......well those teachers will always be special no matter what the program is.

I don't have kids so it's not a major issue for me (excpet I'm paying taxes for other peoples kids), but it seems like the system has gone from a personal thing to an assembly line.

Knowledge, IMHO, doesn't come in a can.

I don't mind the assessment part of NCLB.....the FCAT or the WASL...after all, a lot of kids are graduating high school when they can hardly read....its the punitive part of NCLB that bothers me. You close a school down because it can't meet the assessment standards??? That doesn't make sense.
