The ones with the most to lose are the local Sunni. If the Salafi extremists get their wish and push Iraq into a full scale civil war, the Shia will do to the Sunni what the Sunni did to them under Saddam Hussein.

I suppose so, the retribution would be vicious.

On the other hand, it is hard not to see a significant increase in Iranian influence should that take place. A real negative for the US. Saddam, for all his problems, did serve as a bulwark against Iran. I am certain that is the reason the US did not depose him during the Gulf War.
