Self awareness Tat Tvam Asi members.shaw.ca Delay of gratification, more specifically the degree to which we are able to delay gratification, is directly correlated with our abilities to carry on vision and purpose that transcends the present circumstance That is pure Buddhism 101...i wonder where that came from? I wonder to this day if the Taliban realize that they blew up the one representation of the major sources of Muhhamed's (PBUH) visions and realizations ? You don't believe for one moment that all those spice scented & enchanted enticements of the divine calling to self awarness and self control were not transported by caravans from out of India or up from Sri Lanka & wafted up upon the shores of Medina and Mecca ? Without any more sense of history than the Koran , how would the indoctrinated uneducated barbarians as the Taliban could ever know ? What is best about Islam is the Buddhism and the empasis on those Buddhists' ideas of restraint and observance and that practice of humility at its core ....and the worst is its dependency on that greater Monotheistic Tribalism and frozen Mono~Deist dogmas that are attempting to be all inclusive but in the end alienate . That destruction of those statues in Afghanistan were not the destruction of "Idols" , they were the destruction of a representation of Islam's very root sources .... a representation of the "human" realizations that probably inspired the beginnings of the Prophet & Islam itself . But people do tend to not see when they get too focussed on "scriptures" and other competing Monotheisms....and the debates are endlessly fruitless as flawed as the human being that crafted the scripture and one's that perpetuate them to their own demise . How silly , yet no one saw it ....but Einstein did : The religion of the future will be a cosmic religion. It should transcend a personal God and avoid dogmas and theology. Covering both the natural and the spiritual, it should be based on a religious sense arising from the experience of all things, natural and spiritual as a meaningful unity. If there is any religion that would cope with modern scientific needs, it would be Buddhism. Should we still kill all Buddhists because they still choose to be remonded of truth by their statues ?

Thru the study of History , we also become "self aware" . One is reminded of the mass murder in India , when the Islamic hordes swept in . It was easy to slaughter all the helpless monks worshipping (meditating) before idols , for the Koran and the Prophet(PBUH) did command it . Well it was a nice concept that , and made justification for some of the worst genocide in history of that time , and some of the most marvelous land grabs of all time . Buddhism was easy to kill being monastically based . Kill the monks and you killed the religion. Thankfully it had spread far into China/Asia/Japan and down thru Sri Lanka , and survives to inspire us all to this day . But all that death in the name of "Allah" ... i guess was a small price to pay for opening up the trade routes & establishing another stable empire that would later stem the new barbarian hordes , yet itself fall into scriptural stagnation unable to adapt & change . But was all that death necessary for just a few trite scriptural notes , that translated into decrees of death ? Let us all be so "aware"....all the way down to the millions that died when India separated and regained its own independence finally . I wonder if the Prophet's (PBUH)truth and his "God" foresaw all that new misery & death down the road ...being a prophet of God after all and so very "aware" <g>

Several animals besides humans (including the great apes and dolphins) are self aware as tested by the ability to recognize their image in a mirror as being themselves, and not another similar creature. That is a different thought pattern than being able to recognize a door as a door. Self awareness in children is thought to be a product of communication with others. I'm not familiar with any research that indicates this. Indications are that people become self aware when their genes progress to that point in their development , just as they become sexualy mature when their genes pass that point. The whole program of development does not finish playing out for perhaps 30+ years. TP
