Unless you provide specific examples, I really don't know what you are talking about.

What happened in the past can often teach us a lot (as in the case of those who ignore the painful lessons of history will be condemned/destined to relearn them.)

In a similar vein, I believe that very often, it is possible to correlate present events with their root causes in the past. This is in accordance with the natural law of cause and effect.

Historical analyses of events proceed in both directions, from the past to the present and from the present to the past. More often than not, past events set in motion forces that shape the present. Thus evolution into the present may be traced to past causes. Nothing silly at all! If you don't agree, we just happen to disagree. That's all!

How do investigators attempt to solve criminal cases? By going backwards, of course. How do psychologists and psychiatrists attempt to understand the psyche of an individual? By analysing his past and much of what had transpired.
