A load of bull i am afraid. You dont have a clue what it is to be a hotel worker in New Orleans without a car to get out when the storm came in which you lost all because as a member of the low socio-eco group you lived below sea level. And then folks like you tell them--you get what you deserve or i, with my better education and fancy car, got out, had insurance, had family elsewhere. You have no clue about the history of that part of LA or what poor people go thru when faced by a natural disaster of this magnitude. So defend Brownie and attack the brown and black folks who were unable to escape the squalor. Because that apparently is your style.

How do we overcome adversity? It's an interesting question.

If you were totally stripped bare of everything, your clothing, your identification, your financial accounts, your home, your automobile, your job, even your family -- what would you do?

I have a lot of family and friends who lost everything to Katrina. Some even died. None immediately. The ones who died -- well, it's an awfully strange coincidence that so many young and strong people just died in the past few months.

My guess is that we depend on our families and the rest of our social network, and, failing that, the kindness of strangers, and, failing that, our personal strength, and, failing that, we die.

If so, the whole "social compact" theory is a lot of hooey.

Life is solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short. Don't ever forget it. And, even if you do forget it, reality is just a door slam away.

Funny thing is, I am the optimist. LOL.
