At some place in between, maybe your common sense should assess your level of risk, the type of normal auto and homeowner insurance you already own, and the chance you will behave negligently and therefore be held liable for more than about a million bucks.

If you can get held liable for killing someone in a freakly violent auto accident, you will probably be dead, too, (or need some really comprehensive medical/long-term care insurance) and won't care.

Just playing devil's advocate here......not necessarily against umbrella policies.
