I really don't know what I'm talking about. The last financial statement audit I was even partly responsible for occurred in 1980. Then we were only worried about the tax accrual and the inflation-adjusted accounting footnote. Internal controls were management's problem and all we had to do was tell them they could be better.

I fully agree with you George. In my experience it is a big issue, and it is a drain on resources and paperwork. the smaller companies cannot easily afford the resource drain. IMO, the pendulum has swung too far towards caution but it will take a long time before it swings back even part way.
