What I meant was what I said: That Saddam was an ally at one time. We had certain mutual interests (notably the survival of Iraq and the protection of oil supply) and cooperated toward certain mutual goals.

Which is pretty much the same thing as I said with the exception that I didn't use the word ally.

I agree but I don't think that is enough to qualify as an ally.

If your trying to keep either side in a war from collapsing and you help out the side that seems to be losing I don't think that makes them an ally.
