The French system offers more stability but does so at the cost of higher overall unemployment and slower economic growth, both of which go against workers' interests. Only Germany is worse in Europe.

It's not hard to use regulation and taxation to smooth out some of the dislocations caused by economic change, specifically companies changing strategy to fit in with those changes. But companies aren't intended to build and run entire communities. Holding them liable for everything that happens in areas where they operate creates a whole new set of disincentives that ultimately lower the number of jobs available for the workers.

This is one of those knotty issues where the simple rhetoric of the left and the right are both unconvincing to me.
