Goldwater couldn't stand the religious right. For one thing, he was Jewish. for another thing, he hated anyone telling him what was "moral" and what wasn't. Nixon and now Bush pander to the religious right, pretending to agree with them and using them, feeding them scraps of red meat. But in reality, Bushies think the religious right are wackos too. Delay's chief of staff is quoted as calling them "wackos" and DElay was the religious right's top rep in congress.
