Should I not be in favor of the best safety system possible? I understand there are many esoteric and economic and other arguments that could be made in favor of letting a company owned by UAE concerns run our ports. But, for me it seems pointless to fight this already dubious War on Terrorism, if we're going to just give the game plans to our ports to the other side. Why should we particularily trust the UAE, or our government for that matter given their terrible track record at telling the truth over the years? There are many reasons not to trust the UAE: hanging with Bin Laden in the 1990s, supplying nuclear technologies to regimes like Iran, financing terrorism, two 9/11 hijackers from the UAE. Sorry, but these guys are only two heartbeats and a handshake away from our worst enemies. Giving them access to our ports in any way is a bad move from a security point of view. Why even open the door a crack? Why not take security as seriously as it should be and put these ports under full American control? I know we have a little thing callled "free markets", but we don't let that get in the way of our security on other matters, and we shouldn't in the case of our vital ports. Sorry, but me and tens of millions of other Americans are not fools and we won't be sold down the river by a bunch of greedy bastards. These ports will stay out of UAE hands. BTW, did you hear the port deal is actually 21 ports, not 6? Just wait until that hits the newspapers.UAE terminal takeover extends to 21 ports, By PAMELA HESS UPI Pentagon Correspondent WASHINGTON, Feb. 24 (UPI) -- A United Arab Emirates government-owned company is poised to take over port terminal operations in 21 American ports, far more than the six widely reported. The Bush administration has approved the takeover of British-owned Peninsular & Oriental Steam Navigation Co. to DP World, a deal set to go forward March 2 unless Congress intervenes. P&O is the parent company of P&O Ports North America, which leases terminals for the import and export and loading and unloading and security of cargo in 21 ports, 11 on the East Coast, ranging from Portland, Maine to Miami, Florida, and 10 on the Gulf Coast, from Gulfport, Miss., to Corpus Christi, Texas, according to the company's Web site. upi.com
