It might look like Orange County 50 years ago but it is not as peaceful. NZ is a nasty little place, with violence and burglary common [compared with 50 years ago though not compared with places like Colombia, South Africa, Brazil etc]. Maybe it was Tauranga?

<He thinks it looks just like Orange County did 50 yrs ago when he was growing up. He told me the name of the town he was most impressed with, but alas I don't recall what it is.>

It had to be like Orange County and he was impressed. So that excludes Masterton and Queenstown. It leaves out Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch [too cold in winter]. Kerikeri is too small [even for Orange County 50 years ago]. Taupo isn't near the ocean and generally, Tauranga was the likeliest pick.

It is the best place on the planet [other than in GDP per capita and in a few other respects - lots really I suppose]. But it's not for the night life crowd, or those after the scope of New York.

It is growing fast, unlike nearly all other towns/cities in NZ.
