Getting more populated, congested and expensive all the time.

About 10 years ago, I was getting the bum's rush from Realtors and builders who were selling new-home communities in the Williamsburg, VA, area--they wanted agent referrals of buyers seeking retirement homes in Williamsburg. The communities appeared to be pretty nice. Shoulda bought one myself!

Now some Realtors who used to work in the DC area are soliciting all of us for referrals, because they're now working in Williamsburg, and people from here are moving down there in droves.

About six years ago, I sold a widow's home in my town so she could move to the retirement home she had just bought in a planned community in Fredericksburg, VA. That place has now grown up and Fredericksburg (about an hour+ away from DC) is now regarded as a suburb of DC.

I wouldn't consider anyplace in Virginia as a likely place for buying real estate as a retirement refuge. It's all going to the dogs (of development and mega-population).

North Carolina and Georgia aren't far behind, though.
