When a colleague tried to renew his pilot's license the day after Christmas several years ago and never came back, the Coast Guard search for weeks and all they found was a wing strut and a tire. With the Cutter Liberty and a number of smaller boats, they took all the volunteers from the federal building out for a shore search the weekend after the plane was lost, and we searched fourteen miles of shore, to no avail. The Coasties were fabulous. Here's the Liberty. uscg.mil That's an apartment building in the background that I used to navigate back to Auke Bay Harbor in my own boat when I lived in Juneau. It was the most visible landmark on shore.
