They will know the layout of the ports......their vulnerabilities.

This is public knowledge as far as I know. At least, its not hard to get. Thousands of relatively low wage, relatively unrestricted workers man the operations of the port every day.

That's true but there is always insider information to be gained from someone running a facility.

And as Tim has pointed out, if the goal were to attack the port itself, a ship could pull up next to the port and just detonate their nuclear bomb while waiting for the Coast Guard to check it out - same affect. You don't need to know where the port latrines are to attack the port.

You are right if the only thing we have to fear is a nuke. But what if they want to smuggle in toxic chemicals and plant the chemicals in the water system of NYC or Baltimore. There are any number of possible scenarios for which the ports could be used.

However, what you have missed living in the ME is the atmosphere that has been encouraged in the US by the Bush administration. Essentially, we have been told the Muslims are around every corner and are planning incredible mayhem. Since 2001, there has been a growing paranoia that the Bush administration has tapped into and carefully honed to and for their benefit. A hatred and fear for all things Muslim has been cultivated.

The idea that it was more hyperbole than fact is clearly shown by the rather ineffectual analysis the administration did on the port takeover by a Muslim firm and their utter surprise when people became incensed. It clearly shows that the Bush administration never bought into all the fear mongering that they were putting out.

So now, you have not only a tactical issue, but a psychological one as well. And I am not sure people will feel safe with a Muslim firm manning the ports no matter what is done to allay their fears. You don't get over 5 years of fear in the drop of a hat.

Its not likely you will understand, but this is just one more bird coming home to roost on the Bush White House. And per usual, it was mostly of their doing.
