Much of what we import from China comes from 'American' firms. Japan also exports to the US via China. What you see from 'China' is often designed and engineered in Japan and Korea before being manufactured and shipped from China.

Russ,

I have never seen a good report on it but comparing trade with China vs trade with Japan is not even close to apples and oranges.

These trade balance numbers are probably more unreliable than the new home sales numbers that we were just subjected to again this morning.

The difference being our "partnership" with China. Every single major US company now have some ties with China. MOT, Nike, Intel, GM, F ...... all have major manufacturing facilities nn China. How many of them have manufacturing facilities in Japan? How is that trade counted?

On the other hand, Japan has manufacturing facilities in US, such as SONY, Toyota, Honda etc while there are NO China brands being manufactured here. How is that trade counted?

Bottomline, we can blame others for whatever we want but until we change our Lou Dobbs attitude, we are going down.

Definition: Lou Dobbs attitude - those who belive that if you are born in the USA, you are automatically entitled to higher pay, more benefits and a better living than foreigners who are 10 times more qualified and work 50 times as hard.
