Martyrs can be troublesome. It's probably not particularly bad that he escaped. People all have feet of clay when inspected closely enough, long enough. If they die, especially young, in the line of fire, it's easy for them to become heroes and martyrs.

So, yes, you are right, but I don't think it was a plan to have him escape. Captured would have been better, sitting in a USA prison for mass murder. In with, say Charles Manson. They could discuss philosophy with each other.
