Paul, it is easy to imagine many people have capital loss carryforwards that they cannot easily burn through. consider how many people lost 80% or more of their portfolios between 2000 and 2002. i know plenty of people in that boat. they will need to quintuple their portfolios from the 2002 lows before they burn through their losses.

i also agree about accountants.

Re: "If you make enough money - and imo '05 was the year to do it for oil stocks - those gains ought to - or might have -wiped out carryover capital losses, and without carryover losses, there would be no $3000 write-off to discuss."

somewhat off-topic, but has anyone here been hit by the AMT to the point of making their cap gains carryover losses totally wiped out? I am afraid I have fallen in that category for 2005.

My AMT ends up being *twice* what the regular tax tables indicate because to calculate it they put back real-estate taxes, ignore capital gains carryover losses (of which I had plenty), and limit the mortgage deductions. Freaking unbelievable.

I am still hoping for a bug in Turbo Tax ... yeah, right.

<< A BIG mistake to go cheap and dyi with TuboTax-like stuff>>

Your pro tax accountant nods his head and acts very officious and profound when you are discussing your return. Then after you've left him with your organized receipts, he pulls out his "Turbo-Tax" or "Tax-Cut" and fills in the form for you. The next day he calls and lets you know he has saved you thousands. He also let's slip a few of his acute observations that he picked up from the side-bar windows of Turbo-Tax.

Life in modern times,
