My experience much different. I know no one who lost so much money in their portfolios in '00 through '02.

man, you must have not been hanging out on the tech threads here -g-. remember back in the late 90s, SI was much more tech-oriented. many tech-heavy people enjoyed big runups in the 90s but had big drawdowns from 2000 to 2002. not sure if that includes any of the folks on this thread.

On this thread, one big recurring theme is that in past oil stocks have been very volatile: good times (high prices) like now with much enthusiasm have been followed by surprising drops in oil prices, so BE CAREFUL

yes, that's why there were all the "experts" saying to sell in 04 and again in spring of 05. fwiw, i am as much a koolaid drinker as any energy clown but i sold off 75% of my holdings on 1/3-2/1. more a personal asset allocation decision than any indictment of the NPV of energy stocks. but hey, Jan was a great month so why look a gift horse -g-.

this thread was EXTREMELY bearish in early January, based entirely, it seems, on the weather (i dubbed it the "Weather Channel Thread"). that perspective was right insofar as NG futes go, but it was 180 degrees wrong regarding the short-term equity performance of the sector. seems many J6Ps out there chasing last years performance just had to throw their lunch money into the Fidelity Energy Select or whatever, overwhelming whatever the Weather Channel said about funny mentals.
