I am just an accompanist, not a "real" teacher, but the two directors I work with are very young, and I think I add a nice, stable, grandmotherly touch. There is something to be said for being a contract employee and working because you enjoy it. Age brings a certain decrease in self-consciousness, I think. I can make a fool of myself without the accompanying embarrassment that I suffered at 25. One student started singing without me last night. I have no idea what he was thinking. He just walked up and started singing. I yelled, Wait for me! I call out words, and sometimes I sing along to get them back on track. Of course, Sat. at the competition, I will be very proper and dignified. I was so wound up last night, I ended up playing Second Life until late. My older son just took a job with a young startup company which deals in virtual reality development. He is very excited, and insisted I join this virtual reality place -"second life". You create a character, and you can make yourself look anyway you want. After that you go out into the world and you can buy things, like clothes and land, and you can build houses and design things. They rebuilt New Orleans and are having Mardi Gras there right now. All this in virtual reality. It is way beyond me. I am still trying to give myself a cute nose and I refuse to leave the orientation level til I have something decent to wear. CW says I'm not getting the idea, so I tried flying and fell into the ocean. He has already bought a nice waterfront property and is building. Sadly, he planted a tree and it grew over his neighbor's lot so the neighbor chopped it down and built a wall. Then he developed a little program that he sold to virtual people, and soon he had lots of money, so he went to the casino and lost it all. Sounds too much like real life to me. Meanwhile I have made my eyes silver and given myself black lipstick.
