Very good and perceptive post. We so often analyse other cultures from the perspective of our own culture and its inbred values and cultural norms. To understand a society and its development we have to understand a country's or region's history and development. Our own habits and experiences often become our blinders and biases and therefore inevitably prevent us from comprehending. History has taught us that there are many forms of successes and even the evaluation of such "success" depends heavily on ones culture and history.
