BDAZZ, re: MOT and “MOT is used to having favored royalty rates”

Good point.

PJ also stated at Bacelona (the big 3GSM event) >>>>

"We may see WCDMA phones at those price points, between $100 and $120, towards the end of this year," Jacobs told Reuters in an interview.”

This could have also “ticked” off the MOT folks as perhaps using Freescale limits their ability to drive their 3GSM (WCDMA) products to those pricing points. Additionally, this also counters MOT’s commentary that the Q’s chips pricing / royalty rate is counter productive to the ramp of 3GSM handset sales.

Rationalizing an excessive cost of a 3G EVDO handset by comparing it to the cost of a 2.5G GSM handset is ludicrous.

Certainly, it's a silly point to make when arguing that the BOM of CDMA handsets (and Qualcomm's contribution thereof) was prohibiting competition with GSM handsets in emerging markets. Even so, I would have been interested in seeing the cost delta between the GSM and DO RAZRs: All other things being equal, Qualcomm's MSM probably costs $25, CDMA royalty is about $14.75 (after netting out the MSM :) ). The GSM chip is probably $10 and incurs Motorola no incremental royalty.
