In terms of January '05 versus January '06, however, the PMI applications declined just 8.4%, which is the more meaningful number to me. I suspect that -8.4% yoy decline was mitigated, however, by the warmest January ever recorded, and so February and March might show the underlying weakness to be much greater than "just" -8.4%.

Then I answered my own question. The last time the two moved in lock step for any significant duration was the twelve-year period 1929-1941, including one very notable intermediate term 1932-36 where they both corrected upward together. Right-shift 70 years and things look pretty similar...
