Another great book along these lines is Notes from the Century Before by Edward Hoagland -- randomhouse.com

If you read Harper's or The New Yorker last century you will know the author's name, as he was probably the greatest American essayist of the last half of the 20th C.

He made several trips to Northern BC and the Yukon in the 1950s with the express purpose of talking to the old-timers -- both aboriginal and white prospectors and hunters and trappers, etc. -- who had come to maturity in the the bush and in the small communities in the 19th C. Some of them were still prospecting and trapping in their 80s and 90s when he spoke to them.

I was lucky enough to read it while camping in the Cariboo -- even read a chapter in Barkerville one day!

He's such a wonderful writer that he really made those times come alive for me, and I have been recommending this book widely ever since.
