AMD's Improved Earnings Outlook

Morgan Stanley analyst Mark Edelstone increased the earnings outlook on Advanced Micro Devices, citing an increase in the chip company's penetration into the enterprise server and PC markets.

The analyst increased his 2006 and 2007 earnings-per-share estimates on AMD (nyse: AMD - news - people ) to $1.70 and $2.20, respectively, from $1.60 and $2.15.

“Based on strong near-term server demand and our expectation that AMD’s mix will continue to richen, we expect the company to report another positive earnings surprise in the first quarter,” the analyst said in a report Tuesday.

The analyst said he believes that for the first time, believes that Google (nasdaq: GOOG - news - people ) server purchases in the near-term will use AMD’s Opteron processors.

Moreover, analyst estimated that the company’s average selling prices are more than $55 below those of Intel (nasdaq: INTC - news - people ).

The analyst said he expects an increase the number of enterprise SKUs from original equipment manufacturers such as Hewlett-Packard (nyse: HPQ - news - people ), Lenovo Group, Sun Microsystems (nasdaq: SUNW - news - people ), Fujitsu, Siemens (nyse: SI - news - people ) and NEC.

The analyst maintained an “overweight” rating on shares of AMD. Other companies in the semiconductors sector that the firm rates “overweight” include NVIDIA (nasdaq: NVDA - news - people ), Analog Devices (nyse: ADI - news - people ) and Semtech (nasdaq: SMTC - news - people ).
