I was really only exposed to the Rand flavor, and am indebted to Tim Fowler for some clarification on the subject (See Wikipedia on Libertarians and Objectivism). Many Libertarians disown the Ayn "Objectivists", whereas I always thought she was the definition of Libertarian.

In the political spectrum I like libertarian principles in the free speech, free thought arena, but in the environmental sphere where your actions affect others, I'm more in favor of regulation, or other means which can accomplish the same thing. I'm no fan of the welfare state, or big government, but I am also well aware of the shortcomings of unregulated capitalism, something Ayn seemed to think an impossibility. LOL!

You every noticed how guys like Mq will flog the notion that governments can't do anything well, but when faced with Enrons, they just shrug it off and say, well, those where not good people, and REAL capitalism is not like that. What a pile!

In some measures President Bush is very conservative. He shares his faith with rougly 75% of our population. Those that view >73% of the population as wingers must lead very insular lives.

In other measures President Bush is left of center. Most conservatives disdain his profligacy. The left condemns him despite his adherence to their standards. That is just pure partisanship.

"Maybe in the post bush era we can go back to meeting in the middle and selecting leaders who are acceptable to most or at least more folks including those who didnt vote for them."

That would require a loyal opposition. The Democrat party is purging members that resemble that. Who is it that will participate in this centrism? I would love to see a true moderate centrist party. I would be freed of the whackos in the Republican party. Others would be freed from the Democrat whackos like Dean, Pelosi, Kennedy, Reid, etc. It seems like a pipe dream.
