"Remember Jose Padilla? He was denied his rights ..."

Yes. I remember Jose.

Jose was a member of notorious Chicago street gangs in his youth. He is also a convicted murderer. Later in life he joined a new gang and became an al-Qaeda operative. Padilla proposed the idea of building a bomb in the US. He then traveled to Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan, and Pakistan.

Padilla got some instruction in bomb-making, and some cash. Al-Qaeda leaders reportedly discussed with him schemes ranging from "dirty bombs" to blowing up gas stations — discussions which some captive terrorist leaders appear to have shared with U.S. agents. So Padilla flew back to Chicago under U.S. surveillance, and into the waiting arms of the FBI.
