Friedman has been promoting his gas tax for years now. The fact that it would cause an instant recession doesnt seem to bother him. I am not even sure it would end up doing the good he thinks it would on the conservation side. I know you wont like a tax solution and i as a supply sider dont like taxes much either. How about an auto tax on traditional cars that makes hybrids and others more attractive. Or reverse that, how about tax credits for hybrids? Maybe the consumer needs a push, albeit a friendlier one that a friedman gas tax. If there werent national security implications re: foreign oil, i would be comfortable with the let the market decide mantra of conservatives. But i do think those national interest problems are real. mike
