I admit to being conflicted. I'm torn between admiration for people who become so involved with their passions that they excel beyond any normal expectations, and scorn for their sacrifice of more mundane but equally important or more important things.

In Outside Magazine today I read about a 13 year old in Oahu who dominates the amateur surfing scene world wide and has already had a documentary movie made about him. The photographs of him were predictably stylish, giving the impression that he is the coolest 13 year old on earth. I wondered what in his life would actually be useful, but who am I to judge?

Maybe I am just jealous that my life circumstances require me to sacrifice any possibility of pursuing a passion to that degree.
