It's control of the land by foreign, non-Muslim people that upsets the Arabs, not money. If it were only a money issue it would have been resolved decades ago. Like it or not, they want the ability to live in land that includes modern day Israel (at least the idealogues who seem to be in control everywhere want it). I could be wrong, but I really don't think they are that thickheaded. My sense of the ME negotiating style is that you hold your opponents' feet to the fire as long as posssible until you get as much as possible. I think the reason why this thing isn't settled is because of the Israelis and Jerusalem. The Arabs are adamant about the internalization of Jerusalem. Too many of their important artifacts are in Jerusalem. They want to be able to occupy Jerusalem....at least in part. The other is the Israelis themselves. I think the Israelis are very ambivalent about giving the Palestinians their freedom....they like the status quo even though its a painful one. With independence, the Palestinians would be free to build up a competing state with the help of Arab money right on Israel's border. Right now, the West Bank and Gaza act as a nice buffer between Israel and the other Arab states. In addition, the West Bank has a huge water aquifer.......something Israel is desperately short of. I think Israel has a vested interest in appearing to be willing to accommodate a Palestinian state, but in reality is opposed to it. Of course, in the past, the Palestinians have assisted the Israeli position by setting up suicide bombings. Every time a bomb goes off.....Israel can say.....see they are bad people who don't deserve their own state. And begrudgingly, the world agrees.
