Why aren't these assets returned too? Why aren't the ancestors of slaves past compensated too? Those records exist too. 1. Because many of the people who lost that property are still in fact alive or are first generation descendants. For the same reason, I'd also advocate some direct compensation to Palestinians who were kicked out of Israel, both from the Israelis and from the Arab countries that used them as pawns. While the "right of return" may be impractical, monetary compensation certainly is not. As for the Native Americans and the ancestors of slaves, I fully advocate us donating a fairly large portion of our resources to helping them make it -- building schools, finding jobs for them, providing welfare when needed... If I were to be elected to public office, I would lobby for this personally. Of course, too many white people would be opposed. 2. Because Israel Singer, the guy in charge of the Claims Conference, which lobbied for Holocaust Restitution for Jews, had deep pockets behind him and also mounted a concerted, impressive effort. Nobody among the Roma or other oppressed minorities under the Nazis has been able to put together such an effort. Just the reality of the situation. If I were in charge, as many of the others would be compensated as possible. Hell, I'm someone who thinks that anyone who's falsely imprisoned for any stretch of time over a week during the course of Bush's "war on terror" should see significant compensation. You're preaching to the choir, but to me, anyone who can get the compensation he or she deserves should get it, and it's not a bad thing that the Jews got it from WWII. -Z
