I felt secure because my wife and daughter were in a new apartment, albeit in a small town in North Idaho. We had friends next door, and a couple on the other side who had an abusive relationship. The guy put his fist through the door and gashed blood all over the place.

It was VERY different from the environment that we had just moved from, which was in Darby, PA, one block from the Philadelphia city line and the ghetto. We lived in a house that had been broken up into apartments and had different owners for each half.

The funniest coincidence: our landlord, who was a photographer for the Philadelphia Enquirer, was an older gentleman. Somewhere along the line I mentioned that I was a forester and that Gifford Pinchot was the father of the US Forest Service (and also a governor of Pennsylvania). My landlord had been a personal acquaintance of Gifford Pinchot.
