I met George Rockefeller on his estate, which was something like 22,000 acres, down from four times that at one time. He had it laid out as a deer preserve.

Cleared the boundaries like the Canadian border, and during hunting season he would have men out patroling for people who wanted to cash in on the MANY deer that roamed his grounds.

Rockefeller's estate was so large, we spent several days measuring the trees on plots that had been randomly selected from aerial photographs as part of a state-wide forest inventory.

We had completed a plot down by one of his cleared borders and were returning up a dirt road when here comes a classic Mercedes. It was driven by Rockefeller and he had in his company a Fish and Game official, who was apparently helping him manage the herd. We chatted for a while, and he seemed very interested in what we were doing.

I asked Rockefeller what that "lookout" building on the hilltop was. It was like a small building with viewing slots instead of windows. He said he liked to come up and watch the deer mate in the fall.

I later heard that Rockefeller died of a self-inflicted shotgun blast. I never took the trouble to verify this information.
