There are two different issues. One is to get rid of the salary cap on SS to get over the BabyBoom/BabyBust hump. Then there's the separate issue of a truly progressive income tax.

It may all go into the same pot but it has to be treated separately on paper or it will truly get stuck in the same pot.

The deficit/debt etc is caused by: the economy, the tax cuts, the war. It will also be helped into further red ink by the lie of the Medicare bill. The trade deficit is also looming as a singularly massive disaster when the USA is no longer competitive even in the upper middle class arena of R&D, medical services and the like.

We have to get out of these ruinous foreign wars, we have to buoy the social net and we have to become competitive again in the world. Mfr is down to something like 11% of GDP and where mfr went to, services are following.

Radiologists in Bangalore are doing the work at a fraction of the cost. You can take a medical vacation to Thailand and get top notch heart surgery at a lower cost than your US deductible. Are foreigners even bothering to come to US Universities any longer? That's getting to be an iffy thing as well.

The competition is hot and heavy and we're bleeding red ink in a third world country that has never been a threat to us.

It's inane, it's insane and Americans seem oblivious to the very real danger of being an also ran country.
